KUCHING: Police arrested 10 persons for suspected substance abuse during a four-day special crime prevention integrated operations recently.

Kuching police chief ACP Ahsmon Bajah said the main objective was to focus on the prevention and elimination of rising crime cases.

Phase One of the operation from June 23 to 26 was to intensify crime prevention patrols in crowded and targeted locations and high-risk areas.

“Throughout the period, the team busted 10 individuals for substance abuse under Section 15 (1) (a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

“A total of 56 summonses were also issued for various traffic offences.

“The team also conducted spot checks on 46 premises and inspected 607 people,” he said.

In another update, Ahsmon said the index crime rate for the first half of the year showed a decline of eight cases from 392 in the same period last year to 384 cases this year.

Meanwhile, the police recorded a total of 399 cases for non-index crimes for the same period, which was an increase of 130 cases compared to 269 cases last year.

The local police chief said crime prevention operations of this magnitude would continue from time to time to ensure public safety in the district.
