MUKAH: About 100 people turned up to clean and repaint the 100-year-old St Anthony Chapel at Kampung Tellian here on Saturday.

The chapel has been upgraded under the Rural Transformation Programme (RTP) and an wooden bridge will be built there soon for the benefit of the local residents.

Tellian assemblyman Royston Valentine told the chapel committee to apply for any necessary assistance.

“All the work we do together will be an encouragement to everyone directly or indirectly involved,” he said when officiating at the Sahabat Komuniti Desa (SKoD) programme at St Anthony Chapel here on Saturday.

He also revealed that the chapel would receive a RM5,000 grant for its committee to conduct activities throughout the year.

Apart from the communal work to clean and repaint the chapel, the Mukah Fire and Rescue Department also joined the programme to demonstrate the use of the fire extinguishers.

The event organiser, KEMAS Department, said the programme aimed to foster the spirit of cooperation and volunteerism among the rural folk and to promote close ties between local leaders, government agencies and non-governmental organisations (NGOs).
