MIRI: A crowd of about 1,000 people is expected to witness the official opening of Miri Wireless Walk on Wednesday next week (Feb 26).

In revealing this during a press conference held yesterday, Miri Resident Mastapa Julaihi said the programme is scheduled to kick off at 8pm.

“We are expecting a crowd of 1,000 people to flock to the launching that night,” he said.

The event will begin with the arrival of Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg at Zone A and he will walk further up to a stage located at Zone C.

Two roads would be closed to traffic during the launching ― North Yu Seng and Merpati roads ― starting from Feb 24 until 27 to ensure that the event runs smoothly.

The RM5 million projects was the brainchild of Abang Johari during his time as the Minister of Tourism.

“The name Wireless Walk Miri is derived from the Wireless Village located near the river, not far from Wireless Walk Miri,” said Mastapa.

The main objective of upgrading Wireless Walk Miri is to help local traders to gain more space for their businesses to increase their productivity, and at the same time increase their revenue.

“It will also be a tourist attraction due to its strategic location, adjacent to some of the major shopping malls and four star hotels in Miri (walking distance),” he added.

The Miri Wireless Walk project consists of 57 stalls and five food-truck retail spaces.

In addition, it comes with free wifi internet service for customers.

“Visitors can also expect for some of the local dishes here, namely linut, dimsum, coconut, mee Jawa, Sarawak laksa and many more,” Mastapa said.

“There are several major plans that will involve the Wireless Walk Miri area, including the construction of phase II which involves some interesting and more modern and futuristic structural changes coincided with the chief minister’s announcement to choose Miri as the first Smart City leader in Sarawak,” he added.

The state government also plans to develop the Wireless Walk Miri Village which is adjacent to the Wireless Walk, which includes various aspects of infrastructure facilities, as well as to relocate the village to make it a tourist attraction in Miri.

The significance of these two upcoming projects will be a signature landmark for tourists visiting Miri.
