1,000 residents in two villages affected by floods

MIRI: Floods and water surge following continuous heavy rains since Tuesday affected more than 1,000 villagers of Kampung Long Bemang, Baram and Long Loyang in Tinjar.

Zone 6 Miri Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) acting chief Ahmad Nizam Sapaiee said 530 residents of Kampung Long Bemang and 430 residents in Long Loyang were affected.

The floodwater level in both villages as of today has risen to 1.5 feet high.

However, Ahmad said Bomba woulds continue to monitor the flood situation in these areas.

“At the moment, no evacuation has been made as the situation is still under control.

“Floods in Kampung Long Bemang started since Nov 8, while in Long Loyang, the floodwaters have begun to increase drastically early today (Nov 10) around 4am,” he said.

Kampung Long Bemang is a Kayan longhouse located in the interior of Tutoh Apoh Baram.

It is a flood-prone village.
