11 countries confirm participation

KUCHING: Over 200 junior squash players from 11 countries including Malaysia will be taking part in 3rd CMS Borneo Junior Open Squash Championship 2017.

According to the Sarawak State Sports Council (MSNS) director Dr Ong Kong Swee, the championships, which also known as 3rd BJO 2017, will be held at Sarawak Squash Centre in Petra Jaya, here, from July 7 to 11.

“The championships will feature players from Australia, Egypt, Hong Kong, Indonesia, South Korea, Thailand, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Singapore,” he said during a press conference at a local leading hotel in Kuching, yesterday.

Malaysia will be represented by players from Wilayah Persekutuan, Selangor, Kedah, Melaka, Negeri Sembilan, Perak, Penang, Terengganu, Sabah and host Sarawak.

“Cahya Mata Sarawak Berhad (CMSB) has agreed to become the sponsor for the 3rd BJO 2017 under the Sarawak Squash Junior Development Programme and have contributed a total of RM253,328 for the past seven years,” he pointed out.

“MSNS truly appreciated the support from the corporate sector in the programme which has the primary objectives of providing a good avenue for young players to engage in healthy activities especially in squash,” he added.

“The programme is also to raise the standard of squash among local young talents who can gain invaluable experience through competitive events while enabling the relevant sports authorities to scout for new talents and groom them to become state players and eventually to represent the country at the international level including the Olympics,” he said.

Meanwhile, Dr Ong also disclosed that other upcoming international sporting events which will be held in Sarawak next month are, the Sarawak Chief Minister Borneo Cup International Taekwondo (WTF) Championship 2017 from July 15 to 16 and the Veteran Athletics (31st Malaysian International Open Masters Athletics Championship 2017 from July 22 to 23.
