PUTRAJAYA: A total of 1,268 summonses have been issued by the Road Transport Department (RTD) since taking full control over the operations of the Automatic Awareness Safety System (Awas) cameras on September 1, 2018.
Transport Minister, Anthony Loke Siew Fook in a statement yesterday said the summonses involved speeding (1,121 summonses) and traffic light offences (147 summonses).
He said the takeover by the RTD from private entities included overseeing the operations of 45 Awas cameras, with 29 for speeding and 16 for monitoring offences at traffic light junctions.
“At the same time, there are two more camera locations pending approval from the local authorities, one for speeding, and the other for beating the red light,” he said.
“Members of the public can check the latest list of Awas camera locations on the JPJ website at www.jpj.gov.my. They can also check their JPJ and Awas summonses via the website,” he said.
The minister stressed that the main purpose of the installation of Awas cameras was to educate road users and for the safety of drivers themselves.
“For your information, all these locations identified are accident prone areas,” he said.
In the meantime, he said no exemption or reduction in fines for Awas-related offences would be given beginning Sept 1. – Bernama
