KUCHING: Batang Lupar MP Datuk Seri Rohani Abdul Karim says the implementation of the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP) should also be based on a “whole of nation” approach.

She said this was a crucial as the five-year development plan was to ensure the restoration of the nation’s socioeconomy both in the short- and long-term.

“No matter how good the plan is, it will not work without effective delivery, implementation, monitoring and reporting.

“For improvement, the delivery of the 12MP must adopt a ‘whole of nation’ approach that encourages cooperation between all parties and stakeholders concerned.”

She was debating on the motion of the 12MP tabled by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Yaakob on Monday (Sept 27) in Parliament on Wednesday (Sept 29).

Rohani said the emphasis and focus on a more balanced development should be continued and further enhanced under the 12MP.

The importance of a balanced regional and local development had been identified under the mid-term review of the 11MP and it should remain the mainstay of the new five-year development plan, she added.

She cited how the construction of bridges, such as the Batang Lupar bridge in her constituency, would impact the livelihoods of folk in rural areas.

Rohani said the bridge, which is scheduled for completion in 2025, would boost the economy of folk in the four coastal areas in Sarawak.

“It will not only shorten the journey from here to Sibu but provide accessibility.”

Rohani said it would also enable the Sarawak government to map the area for large-scale commercial agriculture and create commodity areas for both the fisheries and agriculture sectors.

“This would then help transform the coastal areas into a major food basket, not just for Sarawak but Malaysia in general. See how big the impact is with just the construction of a bridge in rural areas.”
