12th Sarawak Election: We wait for Agong to decide

KUCHING: The timing of the Sarawak state election rests with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong as the power to repeal the Emergency Order lies with him, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

“Anything to do with dissolution of the State Legislative Assembly and revoking the Emergency Order is the decision of the King.

“We shouldn’t pre-empt the Agong, the power to dissolve (the DUN) via the revocation of the EO is still with him, so let’s not overstep his powers,” he told reporters at a press conference today (Oct 23) during his maiden visit to Sarawak since assuming the post in August.

Ismail was responding to a question on whether the Election Commission (EC) has briefed him on the upcoming state election.

Speculations have been rife that the DUN will be dissolved before the end of this month, paving the way for a state election.

The term of the current DUN was scheduled to end on June 6. It first met on June 7, 2016, after the 11th State Election five years ago.

Currently, Sarawak could not hold its state election due to the EO effective Aug 2, 2021 till Feb 2, next year.

Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) state government which was formed after it left the Barisan Nasional (BN) in 2018, following the coalition’s loss in the 14th general election commands a comfortable majority in the state assembly, controlling 68 out of the total 82 seats.

To a question on whether Sarawak will get a substantial allocation in the upcoming Federal 2022 Budget, Ismail said it would be announced during the tabling of the Budget.

“God willing, (there will be good news for Sarawak). If I announce it today, then nobody will tune in to the Budget speech,” he quipped.
