13 arrested in cockfight raid

Date:

SERIAN: Thirteen men were arrested for cockfighting on Monday (June 28).

A police team, led by ASP Murad Jemari, raided an area which was believed to be an illegal cockfighting arena at Jalan Tamba No 1 at 5.05pm.

Serian police chief DSP Aswandy Anis said all of the men, aged between 30 and 63, attempted to flee the scene as soon as they realised the presence of the police.

“However, their efforts were short-lived as they were arrested right away and taken to the police station for further action,” he said.

The case is being investigated under Section 3 (1) of the Animal Cruelty Ordinance 1963.

Aswandy added that compounds totalling RM19,500 were issued to the suspects under Regulation 17 (1) of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Regulations (Measures in Local Infected Areas) (No 3) 2021.

The men also violated the standard operating procedures of the movement control order by gathering in public and not practising physical distancing.
