MIRI: Thirteen graves at Riam Chinese cemetery were found vandalised on Saturday evening (December 5).

The discovery was made around 5.23 pm by a man who went to cut grass in a nearby area.

Shocked and terrified to see the extent of the vandalisation, including the removal of a skeleton from a coffin, the man immediately alerted the cemetery’s charitable trust board manager.

A police report was lodged at the Miri Central Police station (CPS) for further investigation.

Acting on the report lodged on December 7, a Miri Criminal Investigation Department team (CID) was deployed to the area to conduct an investigation.

Miri deputy police chief, Supt Mohd Sabri Zainol when contacted, confirmed receiving a report on the incident.

Asked about the motive behind the incident, Sabri said the culprits were most likely looking for valuables.

“There are no valuables here as the graves belonged to poor families and were put under the care of the trust board,” he said.
