14 Chinese schools receive RM6 mln aid

MIRI: Fourteen Chinese private schools in the state received RM6 million  from the state government.

Chief Minister Datuk Amar Abang Haji Johari Tun Open presented the grant to the president of Sarawak United Association of Private Chinese Secondary School Temenggong Datuk Vincent Lau Lee Ming in a ceremony held at Pei Min Middle School here, yesterday morning.

The fourteen school are Pei Min Middle School (Miri), Riam Road Secondary School (Miri), Wong Nai Siong Secondary School (Sibu), Chung Hua Middle School No. 4 (Kuching), Chong Ming Middle School (Sibu), Min Lit Secondary School (Batu Kawa), Chung Hua Middle School No. 1 & No. 3 (Kuching), Ming Lik Secondary School (Sarikei), Catholic High School (Sibu), Kai Dee Middle School (Bintulu), Guong Ming Middle School (Sibu), Citizen Middle School (Sibu) and Public Secondary School (Serian).

Abang Johari said the financial aid was given as Chinese schools were not exclusively for the Chinese community as they also catered to Bumiputera students.

He said the state government would continue to recognise the United Examination Certificate (UEC) and give aid to the Chinese schools in the state.

Meanwhile, on behalf of the Chinese community, Temenggong Vincent Lau extended his gratitude to the state government for the financial aid.

“We wish to extend our appreciation to the Chief Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari and the late Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem for recognising the UEC as well as providing financial assistance,” he said.

Also present were the Chief Minister’s wife, Datin Amar Datuk Hajah Juma’ani Tuanku Bujang, Local Government Minister Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian, Assistant Minister for Solidarity Rosey Yunus and Assistant Minister for Tourism Datuk Lee Kim Shin.
