KUCHING: All Malaysians wishing to enter Sarawak from Peninsula Malaysia will be quarantined for 14 days at the quarantine centres effective Oct 10.

They will also have to undergo Covid-19 tests on the second and the 10th day.

This announcement was made by Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) chairman Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas when speaking at a press conference on Covid-19 update here today.

Uggah added that the cost of quarantine and Covid-19 test will be borne by the subjects themselves.

“However, only the costs charged on Sarawakians will be borne by the Sarawak government,” he added.

Meanwhile, State Health director Dr Chin Zin Hing explained that since Sept 28, Sarawak had recorded four positive cases involving those who returned from Peninsula Malaysia.

“We did not give home quarantine to these cases in the first place. Thus, we wish to impose a stricter measure.

“This measure on quarantine in designated centres is to ensure the effectiveness of quarantine process as we are aware that home-quarantine is a hard task for the people to not socialise with their family members.

“So we believe it is better for them to be placed in designated centres for 14 days to complete their quarantine period,” he elaborated.

He also mentioned that the measure will be enforced at least until Oct 18.

“After that, we will review back the situation and the measures so that we can curb the spread of Covid-19,” he added.
