KUCHING: The Spring Shopping Mall has clarified that to date, 14 members of its security team have tested positive for Covid-19, in addition to eight cases from the store tenants.

In a statement on Thursday night (May 27), The Spring said all the 14 employees and their close contacts have been undergoing quarantine since May 19, with the last positive case reported on May 22.

With regard to cases linked to the store tenants, they said two positive cases were each recorded at Toys ‘R’ Us and Daiso, whereas Coach, Ta Kiong Supermarket, Aeon Wellness, and Big Apple Donuts reported one positive case each.

The statement was in response to reports on Thursday that over 40 employees of the mall had tested positive for Covid-19.

“We were surprised and saddened to hear that there have been more than 40 workers tested positive today (Thursday),” said The Spring.

They said that on Thursday, they worked with the Health Ministry (MoH) to conduct an active case detection (ACD) operation at the mall’s second floor for all employees and retailers from 3pm to 8pm.

“We shall be informed of the results from today’s ACD in a few days. We will continue to work closely with MoH and the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) to ensure your health and safety while managing the business continuity of The Spring,” they said.

The Spring will be temporarily closed until further notice.

The mall’s management had also initiated a temporary mall closure earlier on May 19 for total disinfection.

“We have always and will continue to practise daily deep cleaning and sanitisation in the mall,” they assured.
