16,995 Miri elders sign up for KGC

BEKENU: A total of 16,995 senior citizens in Miri have signed up for the State’s Kenyalang Gold Card (KGC) as of June 26, said Assistant Minister for Women, Family and Childhood Development Rosey Yunus yesterday.

There are some 45,900 senior citizens in this division.

“In Bekenu, 1,208 senior citizens have signed up for the KGC,” she pointed out.

Statewide, a total of 156,726 senior citizens have applied and signed up, she added.

KGC card that was launched on March 7 last year, is an initiative carried out by the state government. It provides and benefits such as discounts on products and services for Sarawakians aged 60 and above.

The initiative also offers compassionate assistance of RM3,000 to cover funeral expenses on the death of cardholders who do not have next-of-kin or coming from poor families.

Rosey said the card (KGC) currently has 54 strategic partners ranging from small grocery shops to large retailers and institutions.

She said this after presenting various aids to recipients including Endowment Fund Sarawak (EFS), post-natal care aid, and special annual grant (GTK) in Bekenu yesterday.
