KUCHING: Seventeen individuals comprising 12 men and five women were issued with a RM1,000 compound each for failing to practise social distancing last Sunday.

Kuching district police chief ACP Awang Din Awang Gani said that inspections were carried out in eateries at Jalan Stutong and Jalan Rock around 2.15am and 5.40pm.

“All patrons in both premises were seen seated closely with each other and ignored the government’s advice to practise social distancing amid the recovery movement control order (RMCO).

“The individuals aged 20 to 40, were brought to Kuching Police Crime Investigation Division (CID) office for compounding purposes,” he said in a statement.

He added that the compounds were in accordance with Regulation 3 of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases (Measures within the Infected Local Areas) (No. 7) Regulations 2020.

Awang Din said the individuals were given a 14-day period from the date of the compound to pay up their fines at Kuching division health office.

“Although compounds are issued almost daily and despite warnings, it is like the news — warning enters one ear and exits from the other,” he pointed out.

He added that with the new cases reported around Kuching, the public should work together to break the Covid-19 transmission chain.
