KUCHING: 17 Indian associations in the state have unanimously agreed to set up the Sarawak Indian United Front (SIUF).

President of Sri Mahamariamman Temple Association Kuching, Shankar Ram told a press conference here yesterday that the association aimed to pursue better prospects in the areas of economy, education and welfare for the Indians. He said that  Indians in the state lacked various privileges, particularly in the form of substantial grants.

“We cannot upgrade our temples due to the lack of grants. We also lack education and welfare funds. Indians in the state are not beneficiaries of any government projects,” added Shankar.

He revealed that  a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the proposed association was signed by all the 17 Indian Associations on 28 May this year.

“We will convey our wishes to the Chief Minister as soon as possible. I hope within a couple of weeks, we will be able to register the association.

“We, Indians, want to be strong, independent and respected like all other races in the state. We are grateful for all that had been contributed to us,” said Shankar, who is currently the spokesman of the movement.

He also noted the Blue Print for Malaysian Indians as announced by the Prime Minister and looked forward to its implementation.
