LIMBANG: Four individuals, including a couple, were detained with 198 crates of smuggled beer during a police raid at Mile 8 Jalan Kubong here on Wednesday night.

Limbang District Police chief, DSP Tega Bilong said acting on information received, a team from the district’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) carried out the raid at 10.45pm and detained the suspects after they were found trying to smuggle beer into the district.

Besides the arrests, he said the police had also seized two four-wheel-drive (4WD) vehicles worth RM160,000.

Tega said further investigation revealed that the suspects were plantation workers and they did not have any criminal records.

“The suspects were also tested negative for drugs,” he added.

The confiscated beer, totalling 198 crates which is worth around RM23,760, was believed to be destined for sale to local shops.

Tega also said that police would be handing over the case to the Customs Department for further investigation under Section 135 of the Customs Act 1967.

Also present with him during the press conference yesterday was district CID chief, ASP Roslan Leman.
