2 kids swept by river current found drowned

The body of one of the victims was discovered in Batang Rajang early this morning.

KAPIT: The bodies of two children believed to have drowned on Gawai eve (May 31) at Nanga Semawang, Batang Rajang, were discovered this morning.

A spokesman from the Sarawak Fire Department operations centre said both victims were found at two separate locations around 7.15am.

“Nine-year-old Damien Dashlley Sedan Donny, was found by his family about 20m from Rumah Ekaw, not far from SK Nanga Embuau.

“Meanwhile, 10-year-old Chelsea Charity Darrie Ricky, was discovered by the public about 20km from Rumah Ekaw, close to SK Nanga Embuau.

“The girl was found under the jurisdiction of Song fire station,” the spokesman said.

Both victims were retrieved and handed over to Kapit and Song police to be taken to the hospitals for post-mortem.

The two children were bathing with their families on the riverbank on the day of the event before they were swept away by the current.

It was reported that while the emergency call was made at 5.42pm, the complainant informed that the victims have been submerged for half an hour.

Following the call, firemen from Kapit station were deployed to the scene, which was around 18 km away from the station, to commence search and rescue works.
