KOTA SAMARAHAN: A total of 200 individuals participated in the disaster simulation training of the temporary relief centre (PPS) organised by the Samarahan Division Social Welfare Office in collaboration with Samarahan Division Resident’s Office.

Deputy Minister for Infrastructure and Port Development, Aidel Lariwoo said the programme is a thorough preparation for all officers and staff of the Social Welfare Department (JKM) as well as the agencies involved in carrying out their duties more efficiently, integrated and effective in PPS when facing disasters.

He said floods, in particular, do not just destroy property but also have a great impact on the mental state of those affected.

“According to the report from the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MET Malaysia), the transition phase of monsoon starts from mid-September until November this year.

“In Samarahan, there are 79 PPS that have been identified by the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) and can accommodate 23,000 disaster victims at any one time,” he said at the closing ceremony of the programme recently.

Aidel, who is also the Sadong Jaya assemblyman, added that JKM focuses on four aspects, namely protection, food, counseling and registration at PPS to prioritise the wellbeing of residents as an initial preparation.

In facing floods, he explained that the involvement of agencies such as the Civil Defence Force (APM), the police (PDRM), armed forces (ATM), Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), Health Department, Rela and volunteers is needed to ensure effective PPS management.
