KUCHING: Blazing hot spell did not dampen 200 Smart Reader Kuching’s children spirits took part in Save Our Oceans campaign to keep Damai beach stretches here clean.

As the children were squealing and splashing the shore sand, it was unremarkable when a total of 455 kilogrammes of plastics rubbish were collected by the children along with their parents and teachers from four  Kuching’s Smart Readers centre, here at Permai Beach Resort Campsite 1, in Damai, today (April 7th).

Kicking off its first World Earth Day 2019 in Kuching, this was a collaboration effort between Kuching Smart Reader branches and Permai Rainforest Resort in order to instill culture among pre-schoolers on the importance of preserving the environment from trash and debris.

Enlivened with Weighing Rubbish Contest, Smart Reader® Jalan Keretapi was crowned with a trophy for the most collected waste at 208.80 kg of plastic waste delivered by Sarawak Biodiversity Centre chairman, Tan Sri Hamid Bugo, who had officiated the programme.

While Smart Reader® from Taman Yen Yen and Rubber Road West came in second and third place, collecting 134 kg and 85.7kg of plastic waste respectively.

Meanwhile, Smart Reader Worldwide subsidiary Aim Smart Academics Sdn Bhd (East Malaysia) operations and business development manager Norma John said the programme aimed at creating environmental awareness by encouraging children to protect and conserve mother nature.

“Through this programme, children can inculcate the good habits easily by letting them experience this with their parents and friends to learning invaluable lifelong skills.

“Striving to mitigate children of a sense of responsibility in protecting and conserving the environment, we are hope that such programme will be furthered in future, “ she said.

Participated by four Kuching Smart Reader®  centres comprising Taman Yen Yen, Rubber Road West, Jalan Keretapi and Jalan Penrissen branches, it is also informed that the campaign will also be conducted at other five beaches nationwide in Selangor, Johor, Negeri Sembilan, Penang and Sabah.
