SIBU: About 2,000 visitors thronged the Chinese New Year (CNY) open house held at the open space in front of Sibu Democratic Action Party (DAP) headquarters in Rejang Park here yesterday.

The CNY open house was jointly organised by Lanang MP Alice Lau Kiong Yieng and Sibu MP Oscar Ling Chai Yew from 8 am to 10 am.

Lau, who is also the Deputy Speaker of Dewan Rakyat when met by reporters, said she was moved by the encouraging response from the public.

“Initially, I expected about 1,000 visitors because today (Jan 28) a few other major CNY open house events are also held in other places.

“If you look at the number of visitors, I think more than 1,000 people have come,” she said.

Ling said, this is the third time they have held a CNY open house at Rejang Park as a government.

“The first time was in 2018 and the second time was in 2019 when we were in the federal government.

“The main reason we chose the open space area in Rejang Park here is because it can accommodate more people,” he enthused.

Meanwhile, the visitors were served with package food and mandarin oranges as well as entertainment to enliven the mood of the CNY celebration.

Among the interesting activities featured during the celebration were lion dance performances, drum beats, Chinese orchestra and the distribution of ‘angpow’ to those children, aged 12 and below, and senior citizens aged 60 and above.
