2021 Merdeka Award Grant for International Attachment open for application

Up to five recipients would be selected to pursue attachments with institutions and organisations of choice

KUALA LUMPUR: The Merdeka Award Trust is delighted to announce that the 2021 Merdeka Award Grant for International Attachment is now open for application.

The grant aims to nurture qualified Malaysian students and professionals between the ages of 22 and 35, to support their journey of excellence to become future leaders that would contribute positively to the nation. The selected candidates would undergo short-term (up to three months) collaborative programmes at globally renowned host institutions and organisations.

The grant covers a broad range of disciplines such as education, visual and performing arts, sports, heritage, community and social work, economics, finance, environment, health, science and technology.

Petronas president and group chief executive officer Tengku Muhammad Taufik said: “The Merdeka Award Grant for International Attachment is committed to retain its position as a key for deserving young Malaysians to become the next generation of leaders in their respective fields. Throughout the years, the programme has provided the necessary skills and expertise that has seen our young leaders expand their capabilities to deliver exceptional advancements for the nation and its people.”

Selected recipients of the 2021 Merdeka Award Grant for International Attachment are expected to embark on their international attachment in 2022, which provides some assurance for potential applicants who are concerned about travelling during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The closing date to apply for the 2021 Merdeka Award Grant for International Attachment is on 3 May 2021.

Since its introduction in 2012, a total of 19 Malaysians have successfully received the grant, with 15 of them having completed their attachments at an international institution of their choice.

In 2012, the Merdeka Award Grant for International Attachment was introduced as a complementary programme to the Merdeka Award to nurture promising young Malaysians and support them in their journey of excellence. It is hoped that the grant can elevate Malaysia’s future generation to one day be recognised among the Merdeka Award recipients.
