21 residents made homeless in Bario fire

MIRI: Fire gutted an eight-door longhouse and a stand-alone dwelling at Kampung Pa Derung, Bario in the wee hours of Friday (March 19).

Miri Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) chief Law Poh Kiong said fortunately, no casualties and injuries were reported.

“The police along with (utilities company) Sarawak Energy Berhad were alerted of the incident and several of their personnel were dispatched to the location along with auxiliary firefighters from Bario.

The aftermath after fire razed a longhouse and a single-detached dwelling in Bario in the wee hours of Friday.

“According to village chief Caleena Pasang, the fire happened between 1.30am and 2.30am and most likely started from an electrical appliance.”

The fire left 21 residents homeless, and Law added that firefighters from Marudi and an investigating unit from Miri Bomba would conduct an investigation to identify the actual cause.

Firefighters responding to a distress call pertaining to a rented room catching fire on the first floor of a building at Taman Sri Dagang, Bintulu on Friday.

Meanwhile, in another fire incident, a rented room in a building at Taman Sri Dagang, Bintulu was ablaze around 11.25am on Friday.

Firefighters managed to put out the fire. The cause is yet to be ascertained.
