SIBU: The Sibu Tower Run 2017, the first of its kind to be organised here attracted 217 participants from throughout the state.

The participants have to run 5km around the Sibu Town Square before climbing 627 steps up the 28-storey Wisma Sanyan, the state’s tallest building.

Chairman of Sibu Municipal Council (SMC), Datuk Tiong Thai King, who is also Dudong Assemblyman flagged-off the run at 6.30am, yesterday.

Speaking at the event, Tiong said Sibu Tower Run was the first event to be held in conjunction with Visit Sibu Year (VSY) 2017.

“Thus, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those involved in the success of this event, especially the participants.

“We are very excited about the event and hope that it would be an annual event for Sibu and the central region. Sibu Tower Run would be another event which could attract both local and regional runners,” he said, adding that more events have been lined-up in conjunction with VSY 2017.

Hence, he urged the people of Sibu and the central region to actively participate in all the events so that VSY 2017 will be a milestone for Sibu and the central region of Sarawak.

Meanwhile, four categories were contested in the Sibu Tower Run, namely women’s veteran, men’s veteran, women’s open and men’s open categories.

In the women veteran category, Lee Leh Ha won first place and took home RM1,000 while Ling Mee Eng and Hii Yieng Nyuk won second place and third place, respectively. They each took home RM500 and RM300, repsectively.

Alex Tiong King Hee took home RM1,000 when he won first place in the men’s veteran category while Kho Khoon Hiong and Ang Ming Chung were in second and third places, respectively.

Mohd Feldarus Abdul Rahman won first place in the men’s open category while Chong Yen Boon was in second place. In third place was Hunsan Hasing.

In the women’s open category, Tho Siaw Khim was in first place while Prescilla Inting was in second place. In third place was Kong Hui Lan.

The top three winners of each category took home RM1,000, RM500 and RM300, respectively while the fourth and fifth place winners received RM100 each. The sixth to tenth place winners took home RM50 each.

SMC Deputy chairperson, Rogayah Jemain, organizing chairmen Councillor Wong Hie Ping and Danny Hii of DNA Sports were among those present at the event.
