KUCHING: The Chief Minister’s Industry Excellence Awards (CMIEA) has received 22 entries in five categories this year.

The awards are Micro Category for domestic company with sales turnover not exceeding RM300,000; Small Category for domestic companies with sales turnover of RM300,000 to RM3 million; Medium Category for domestic companies with sales turnover of RM3 million to RM20 million; Large Category for domestic companies with sales turnover exceeding RM20 million and Sarawak Business Federation (SBF) Recognition Award.

SBF president Datuk Abang Abdul Karim Tun Openg said the awards presentation will be held during Sarawak CMIEA’s gala night cum SBF’s third anniversary dinner on Oct 25 at Imperial Hotel Kuching.

Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg will be the guest of honour at the event.

“Sarawak CMIEA aims to honour and give recognition to outstanding businesses in Sarawak as well as promote a culture of entrepreneurship and innovation,” said Abang Abdul Karim at a press conference here yesterday.

He added that CMIEA, introduced by SBF in collaboration with the Malaysia Productivity Corp (MPC), is supported by the state government.

“It’s the highest state corporate recognition award adopted from the national level Industry Excellence Awards (AKI).

“The companies are evaluated using the internationally recognised Business Excellence Framework (BEF) as the benchmark,” he said.

The second Sarawak CMIEA attracted an overwhelming response — Small Category (seven companies), Medium Companies (seven companies), Large (four companies), and SBF Recognition Award (four organisations).

Winner will be crowned either gold, silver or bronze in their respective award category based on thorough assessment made by an independent panel (experts in the industry).

“SBF Recognition Award is introduced to recognise organisations for their excellence and showing good effort in implementing best practices that enhance productivity,” he said, adding that this year would see two new additional awards — CMIEA 2019 Outstanding Award (overall winner) and SBF Special Recognition Award.

As such, both SBF and MPC hoped to encourage businesses and industries in the state to move forward through adoption of best business practices and to be role models and aspirations for others.

“Sarawak CMIEA hopes to spearhead initiatives geared towards improving business processes and practices for the overall economic development of Sarawak, in line with its tagline ‘Productivity for Prosperity’,” he said.

The winner of each category will represent the state at the national level competition.

Abang Abdul Karim said a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Sarawak Business Foundation and its counterpart in Singapore (Singapore Business Foundation) will be inked during the event.
