KUCHING: A total of 22 teams from Kuching and Samarahan divisions are in the fray for the inaugural Inter-Team Match Play Golf Tournament 2019 which will be held at Damai Golf and Country Club (DGCC) starting tomorrow.

DGCC general manager, Roslan Mohd Salleh said the tournament is using the “Texas Scramble” format which is the first of its kind to be used in the club.

“The response towards this event is encouraging and we had to increase the number of entries from 16 to 22 to accommodate the large number of entries coming from the local golfers from various golf clubs,” he added.

He said the main objective of the event is to provide local golfing community with a new concept of competition which is popular in Western countries and to enable the teams to compete with one another in an interesting league format.

“We had the official draw recently and the respective teams captains also came for final briefing which was followed by the handing over of championship trophy by the sponsor,” Roslan said.

“We hope this will be a successful event so that it can be organised annually and on a much larger scale,” he said during the sponsorship handing over ceremony which was presented by Wan Saperi Wan Abdullah of Cahya Mata Malaysia.

The event is an inter-team double knockout event whereby all the teams can compete with one another during the opening rounds.

But it is expected to be competitive because many of the top local golfers are also taking part.
