KUCHING: A total of 2,236 drug addicts have been registered in the state from 2014 to 2017.

Kuching tops the list with a total of 739 addicts followed by Miri (359), Kota Samarahan (304), Sarikei (194), Sibu (183), Sri Aman (128), Bintulu (94), Serian (82), Limbang (78), Betong (65) and Mukah (10).

Assistant Minister of State-Federal Relations and Project Monitoring, Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali who revealed this also disclosed that the national figure of drug addicts recorded from the year 1988 to 2015 is 413,754.

“Also, according to the National Anti Drug Agency (AADK), in 2015, 73.4 per cent comprised youths and the youngest addict was as young as seven years old,” said Hasidah.

She told this to reporters during the launching ceremony of the ‘Programme Memperkasakan Komuniti’ in conjunction with the anti-drug campaign, ‘Perangi Dadah Habis-Habisan’ held at Plaza Merdeka Shopping Mall, here yesterday.

She said that Sarawak will be going all out in waging a war against drugs to save its youth from plunging into the negative effects and labyrinth of drugs.

“The mass media play a big role in this. Also, I applaud private organisations such as Plaza Merdeka in organising this campaign for the betterment of the state.

“With the usage of the LED signs in the shopping mall promoting the dangers of drugs will definitely reach to the minds of shoppers here. This is the first time ever for a shopping mall here in Sarawak to show such initiative.

“We hope that more of this initiative emerges in the future so that we can together combat against drugs,” said Hasidah.

Also in attendance were Deputy Director of AADK Sarawak, Kartina Ujin and General Manager of Plaza Merdeka Shopping Mall, Cheah Kheng Mun.
