KUCHING: A total of 24 murder cases was reported in Sarawak in 2021.

Sarawak Criminal Investigation Department (CID) chief SAC Lukas Aket said this was an increase of 16 cases compared to only eight reported in 2020.

“All cases have been successfully solved, including arrests and investigations into cases of suicide.

“Only one case is still under investigation,” he told the media at the Sarawak Police Contingent headquarters here on Thursday (Jan 13).

As for property crime, he said a total of 3,699 reports was lodged in 2021.

He explained that the number showed a decrease of 1,390 cases compared to 2020, which was 5,089.

SAC Lukas highlighted that the overall crime rate in Sarawak for 2021 showed a significant decrease compared to 2019 and 2020.

“Crime statistics show a decrease compared to previous years where in 2020, 5,874 cases were recorded, and in 2019, a total of 6022 cases.

“In 2021, only 4,298 cases were recorded, of which the index is down by 1,576 cases or equivalent to 27 per cent decrease compared to 2020.”

He revealed that one of the reasons for the decline in the index was due to Covid-19, which included regular patrols to ensure standard operating procedure compliance.
