23-year-old jailed for 12 months for housebreaking and theft

SIBU: A youth was today sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment by a Magistrates’ Court here for committing housebreaking and theft.

When the nature of charge was referred to Khairul, 23, he understood it and the consequences of maintaining his plea of guilt.

The charge against the accused stated that he together with another still at large had common intention of committing housebreaking into a phone shop at Palace Theatre building in Jalan Bengkel with the intention to commit theft at about 3.25am on August 5.

The offence which is punishable under Section 457 of the Penal Code read together with Section 34 of the same Code carries an imprisonment term which may extend to 14 years upon conviction.

According to the brief fact of case, on August 5 at about 3.25am, the complainant (the shop owner) was informed that the shutter of his shop was opened.

The complainant then rushed to the scene. Upon arrival, he did an inspection and found about 100 units of mobile phones of various brands belonging to his customers for repair service were missing. He then lodged a police report.

Acting on information received on the same day at about 8.10am, a police team led by Insp Md Azuwan Mohamad arrested the accused at his house in Kampung Hilir.

Prior to the arrest, the accused attempted to run away upon seeing the police arrival. However, the police managed to apprehend him at the scene.

An inspection carried out at the accused’s room in the house found stolen items of various mobile phones kept inside a box.

The accused and the stolen items were seized by the police for further action.

Investigation revealed the accused had on August 5 at around 3.25 pried open the shop’s shutter with another still at large and stole various mobile phones.

The act was also caught on the CCTV camera installed in front of the shop.
