2,400 expected at IDECS 2018 from 13-15 May

KUCHING: The International Digital Economy Conference Sarawak (IDECS) 2018 will be held at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) for 13 to 15 May.

This was announced by State Secretary, Tan Sri Datuk Amar Haji Mohammad Morshidi Abdul Ghani during a press conference at Wisma Bapa Malaysia, Petra Jaya here, yesterday.

With the theme “Data to Fuel New Economic Growth and Quality of Life”, the conference aims to discuss and embark on new initiatives and action plans of the Sarawak Digital Economy Strategy (2018-2022).

“This conference will once again be a knowledge platform to better understand how digitalisation and future technologies will shape and change how we interact both at our workplace and daily lives,

“As such during IDECS 2018, we have identified four sub-themes namely, Data Intelligence, Start-ups, Smart Communities, and Digital Government. Together these domains cover a broad Dataconomy ecosystems,” said Morshidi.

He added that the topics on Cyber Security, Internet of Things, Digital Banking, Smart Cities and Artificial Intelligence will be covered by both Asian and international speakers and practitioners.

“We have assembled 17 speakers and domain experts ranging from Chief Data Scientist, Digital Strategist for Sweden Government, Cyber Security and Internet of Things (IOT) designers.

“We are indeed excited and honoured to host a special speaker who happens to be a 14-year-old boy prodigy in Artificial Intelligence (AI) by the name of Tanmay Bakshi,” he added.

The opening ceremony on 14 May will be graced by Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi (Dr) Abang Johari Tun Openg where he will also deliver his keynote address.

According to Morshidi, this year, they have invited 26 exhibitors to showcase the latest technological products and innovative services such as CISCO, Huawei, IBM, Sarawak Energy, Maxis and many others.

“IDECS 2018 will also showcase local talents through the IDECS ‘Hackathon’ where our youth community can participate in a design sprint-like event to create new innovations using software application. The hackathon will be launched on 13 May and admission is free.

“We are expecting a total of 2,400 participants from various parties local and abroad. To date we have 1,800 registered participants. The state government strongly encourages the private sector from both large and small medium enterprises to participate in this dynamic conference,” he pointed out.
