KUCHING: The mobile-payment application, Sarawak Pay introduced by the state government has recorded a total of 172,429 transactions from 2017 until April 28 this year.

Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg said the monetary value of the total transaction was recorded at RM14,199,124.53.

“We’ve just launched this e-wallet two years ago, and today there are 68,500 people and 2,400 commercial companies registered with Sarawak Pay,” he said when he launched the K Super Mart Usage on Sarawak Pay’s Application at KK Super Mart, Mile 7 near here, yesterday.

He added that Sarawak was on the right track by introducing the cashless payment that is doing quite well and it is proved that many Sarawakians are technology savvy and are adapting to the mode of transaction.

“In China for instance, the hawker stalls are using e-wallet, therefore we have to move in line with the digital and modern era and the people must change their way of doing business,” he pointed out.

Johari also commended KK Super Mart for being part of the Sarawak Pay ecosystem.

Meanwhile, he said the Sarawak government has inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Singapore Net and China-based mobile payment UnionPay International to ease mobile payment transactions and is now waiting for approval from Bank Negara Malaysia.

The chief minister, when asked by reporters after the event whether Sarawak Pay will be expanding to other Asean countries, said, “It cannot be expanded on its own, but it can be expanded through collaboration with other countries.”

“Sarawak Pay cannot have direct access to Singapore or China, because it involved money transaction, and there must be certain regulation to avoid money laundering”.

He said therefore when the application is approved with the two countries, it would ease visitors in their transactions, as they need not carry a large sum of cash.

Meanwhile, founder and executive chairman of KK Super Mart Datuk Seri Dr KK Chai said as a start he would introduce the use of Sarawak Pay at eight KK Super Mart outlets in Kuching, and twelve in Peninsular Malaysia, including beauty centres owned by KK Group of Companies, namely Slimming Sanctuary Beauty Salon and Clara International Beauty Salon in Kuching.

“We have set a one-month target where our 380 KK Super Mart outlets throughout the whole of Malaysia, and our other subsidiary companies to be registered with Sarawak Pay,” he said.

He added that for the company to use Sarawak Pay was one of the ways to support to the Sarawak government in its strategic actions to digitalise the state’s economy.
