26 illegal immigrants nabbed in ‘Ops Ikrar’

KUCHING: The Kuching Immigration Department detained 26 illegal immigrants from Indonesia in an operation codenamed ‘Ops Ikrar (Sapu)’ at Pantu and Melugu in Sri Aman early yesterday.

The department, in a press statement, said that in the 2.30am operation by a team by led by TPPI Mehuen Runies on a ‘kongsi’ house located in Pantu area, a total of 12 individuals comprising two locals, 5 Chinese nationals, 4 Bangladeshis and an Indonesian were inspected.

During the inspection, no arrest was made all foreigners have valid work permits and travel documents. Meanwhile, a raid on another ‘kongsi’ house in Melugu at around 4.10am saw a total of 54 individuals were inspected.

Of the total, 26 Indonesians were detained for overstaying and failing to present valid travel and personal documents.

The department said a witness summons was also issued to the employer’s representatives to assist in the investigation and all the arrested immigrants were taken to Semuja Immigration Detention Depot in Serian for further action.
