27 evacuated as floods hit Marudi

A Ferry point in Marudi is flooded after the Baram River overflows.

MARUDI: The water level in some areas in Marudi town is reported to be rising after the Baram River broke its banks due to the excessive rainfall over the past few days.

However, floods in some of the affected areas in the district are reportedly subsiding.

Meanwhile, the number of flood victims at the temporary evacuation centre (PPS) at Marudi Civic Centre, which was opened on Jan 29 has increased to27 from 17 as of 3pm on Sunday.

Three infants are among the evacuees.

Marudi Bomba personnel have also been deployed to the surrounding areas to monitor for flood situation.

Miri Fire and Rescue Department Zone six chief Supt Law Poh Kiong said a total of 1, 436 food packs were delivered to flood victims in eight locations within the Telang Usan constituency, including four schools.

The recipients are Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Long Bemang; Long Laput; Sk Long Laput ; Long Sibong; Long Puak; Umah Akeh; SMK Long Lama and SK Ubong Imang.
