LUNDU: Four local fishermen from Lundu scored a whopper of a catch when they caught a 280kg stingray off Sungai Lundu, Lundu yesterday.

Azeri Hipni, 42, from Kampung Stunggang Lundu when contacted by reporters said he and his friends struggled for half an hour before they could land their monster catch.

“This is our first time capturing such a large stingray. Thank God, this is our luck in the month of Ramadan,” he said, adding that the stingrays (and other catches) were taken to Lundu jetty to be sold to fellow villagers.

Lundu, an 80-minute drive from Kuching, is home to about 36,000 people, and is among the most beautiful place in Sarawak with mountains, waterfalls, beautiful beaches, crystal clear blue waters and lots of small islands.

Many believe that the area derives its name from Sungai Lundu, home to ‘ikan lundu’ (mystus nigriceps).

The fishermen cut up the stingray for the market.
