KUCHING: Heavy rain on Friday has caused flash floods in Sebuyau and a temporary relief centre (PPS) was opened at Kampung Entangor’s multipurpose hall to accommodate 29 flood victims.

State Disaster Management Committee secretariat head Major (PA) Ismail Mahedin said the PPS opened at 8pm and the victims were evacuated after their homes were inundated by five feet of water.

The victims aged between 6 and 73 years old comprised of one elderly man and one elderly woman, eight male adults, women (seven), boys (eight), girls (four).

Meanwhile, Simunjan district police chief DSP Merbin Lisa who visited the relief centre noted that the water has started to recede but due to houses located at low-lying and peat soil, there was stagnant water measuring one-foot deep.

He added that with heavy rain since Friday until early yesterday morning and clogged drainage from wild plants, there is a need to address these matters immediately to allow the flood water to flow.
