Police carry out the ‘Op Samseng Jalanan’ around Masja.

KUCHING: Three youths were arrested by traffic police for riding their motorcycles dangerously around Masja last Sunday.

The operation codenamed ‘Op Samseng Jalanan’ involves 30 personnel from the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement and the Crime Prevention and Community Safety divisions.

According to Kuching district police chief ACP Ahsmon Bajah in a statement, during the operation which lasted from 4.30pm until 11pm, the team spotted three local men performing dangerous ‘wheelie’ stunts.

All of them were apprehended and brought to Kuching police headquarters (IPD) for further action.

“The three men, aged between 18 and 20, will be investigated under Section 42 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless and dangerous riding.

“The Section carries a fine up to RM15,000 and a jail term of up to five years, as well as licence disqualification of up to five years upon conviction,” he said.

Throughout the operation, a total of 67 motorists from 55 vehicles were inspected and 20 motorcycles were confiscated.

In addition, the police also issued 143 traffic summonses for various offences.

Among them include modified vehicle structures, licence plates not following the rules and no side mirrors.

Meanwhile, in an effort to reduce the rate of road , particularly fatal accidents in the district, Ahsmon emphasised that such operations will be carried out continuously to detect any drivers or riders who drive or ride their vehicles dangerously.
