3,000 participants expected at Spartan Race

KUCHING: Sarawak will host its inaugural Spartan Race at the Sarawak Civil Service Leadership Institute at Mile 13, Kuching-Serian Road from October 19-20.

The event will represent a new global trend towards a healthy lifestyle.

Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the race will offer a unique Spartan experience to locals when foreigners participate in the event and also contribute to the promotion of sports tourism in the state.

“We expect more than 3,000 participants at the race and to date, 1,500 participants have registered for the race coming from Singapore, Japan, Australia and even countries such as Andorra and Malta,” Abdul Karim said.

He was also confident that the Spartan Race Sarawak will grow as an event with in-bound participants spending more time exploring the various attractions and wonders that Kuching and Sarawak offer.

Meanwhile, Kuching Fitness Association president, Carter Wei said they have plans to develop the Obstacle Course Racing sport and the Spartan Race in Sarawak.

“We believe with such consistent programmes and Sarawakians love for the outdoors, the Spartan Race has a bright future in the state,” he said.

Participants will receive a Special Sarawak Spartan Race finisher shirt and special Sarawak Spartan Race medal after completing the various categories of the race.

The Spartan Race Sarawak offers a challenge for all, from the introductory sprint race covering 5km and 20 obstacles to the very demanding Ultra Beast with over 60 obstacles along a distance of 42 km.
