MANILA: Following are some news-in-brief items on the 30th SEA Games involving Malaysian athletes in the Philippines today:

Missed the Target

Lee Kah May (20:01.86s) and Lim Huee Li (26:50.82s) only managed to secure eighth and ninth place respectively in the women’s individual beach laser, one of the events in the modern pentathlon, a combination of laser pistol shooting and cross country running (3,200m).

Indonesia’s Puteri Dea Salsabila bagged the gold medal with a time of 15:23.59s, followed by Sangngio Natpapat of Thailand who took the silver (16:17.69s) while Singapore’s Shermaine Tung Kai Xin claimed the bronze (16:29.22s).

In the men’s category, Soh Sin Siang (16:16.33s) and Tevis Ong Seng Chuan (17:28.38s) also finished eighth and ninth place respectively.

Muhammad Taufik of Indonesia took the gold with 13:02.24s, followed by the host participant Samuel German (13:27.29s) and Marcus Ong Ming Wei of Singapore won the bronze (13:34.28s).

End journey

Tennis players, Syed Mohamad Agil Syed Naguib and Shahril Shamirul Mohd Adam Das were shown an exit after they lost in the men’s quarter final at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.

The duo lost to the host pair Treat Conrad Hue and Ruben Jr Gonzales 3-6, 3-6.

Women but not ‘softies’ Malaysia edged Singapore 5-4 in sudden death inning after both teams were tied 4-4 at the end of seventh inning in women’s softball quarter final round at The Villages.

It was a come from behind victory for Malaysia who came after trailing 1-4 at the end of the third inning. Malaysia brought in two runs in the fifth before pulling level in the final seventh inning.

Malaysia will play top finisher Philippines on Friday in the semi-finals. – Bernama
