KUCHING: Police arrested 31 individuals after carrying out 21 raids against illegal gambling operations in Sarawak.

Sarawak CID chief, SAC Dato’ Dev Kumar Sree Shunmugam said the operation was conducted from 3 to 17 July with 21 of the raids involving those selling illegal 4D tickets at the counters.

“The raids against illegal 4D in Kuching, Padawan, Miri, Kota Samarahan, Sibu, Serian, and Dalat resulted in the arrest of 30 individuals and seizure of cash amounting to RM5,539, mobile phones, portable printers, calculators and stationeries,” he said.

Apart from illegal 4D raids, a raid was conducted on a cyber gambling outlet in Miri that resulted in the arrests of one individual and seizure of 11 laptops used for cyber gambling purposes.

Of the 31 people arrested, 16 were males while the rest were females. They were aged between 16 and 62 years old.

All those arrested are being investigated for offences under the Common Gaming House Act 1953.

Dev Kumar urged the public to continue giving information on illegal gambling activities to the police. He assured that the identities of informants will be kept confidential.

Meanwhile, Dev Kumar said the police were working with local councils to deal with errant shop operators who run illegal gambling activities at their premises.

Speaking to New Sarawak Tribune, he said the Padawan District police were working hand-in-hand with Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) to stamp out all forms of illegal gambling.

Dev Kumar said following police raids on several entertainment outlets in Padawan District last month MPP Chairman, Lo Khere Chiang, had revoked the licences of four family entertainment centres and vowed to work closely with the police to rid the district of illegal gambling.

“Such actions had won applauses from the members of the public who are tired of their husbands, children and even housewives who frequent such areas to gamble away their hard earned money,” he added.
