32 teams battling for men’s, women’s titles

KUCHING: The 1 3 th Chi e f Minister’s Cup (Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Abang Haji Openg) handball tournament for the men’s category and 8th Dr Haji Abdul Rahman Junaidi Cup for women’s category are being held at Stadium Perpaduan, Petra Jaya beginning Monday.

A total of 32 teams are taking part in the three-day championship – 20 teams in the men’s category and 12 teams in the women’s category – Sarawak Handball Association (SAHA) secretary general Dr Abang lsmail Abang Haji Julhi said recently.

“We did not expect such good response for the tournament and the competition must be a tough one between the teams,” said Dr Abang lsmail.

Besides teams from Sarawak as the host, he said other teams are from Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah. Dr Abang Ismail added that the tournament offers a cash prize of RM1,500 for the champions in both men’s and women’s categories.

Meanwhile, both runners-up will receive RM1,000 cash, RM700 cash each for third placing inclusive of trophies and medals. Chief Minister, Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Abang Haji Openg is expected to officiate the closing ceremony today.
