35 attend ‘Roundtable on Unity in Sarawak’

KUCHING: Thirty-five participants comprising prominent figures, community representatives, heads of relevant government departments and agencies and youth leaders attended ‘Roundtable on Unity in Sarawak’.

Organised by Yayasan Perpaduan Sarawak (YPS), the closed door roundtable was held at Pullman Hotel here, yesterday.

The objectives of the roundtable were to discuss Sarawak’s essence of unity and factors that bind Sarawakians; to

identify lessons that can be learned and shared with fellow Malaysians and to identify challenges and issues facing this legacy of unity in Sarawak.

YPS General Manager Datu Aloysius J. Dris said the roundtable was timely to discuss and explore Sarawak’s ‘essence of unity’ that has consciously or unconciously build the foundation and strong bonding for such mutual understanding and acceptance among the State’s 27 ethnic communities.

“Sarawak has been recognised as a state which depicts social harmony and unity in Malaysia. This usually arouses curiousity as to how Sarawak has obtained this level of solidarity among its people,” he said.

The roundtable consists of three main sessions namely “Exploring Sarawak’s essence of unity and what binds Sarawakians together”; “Unity in Sarawak; What does Sarawak have that makes the difference?” and “Sustaining the Unity in Sarawak”.

The discussants including Chairman of Yayasan 1Malaysia Dr. Chandra Muzaffar, Direcot of Tun Fatimah Women’s Leadership Centre, National University of Malaysia Assoc. Prof. Dr. Madeline, Chairman of Tun Jugah Foundation Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr. Leonard Linggi Jugah, Chairman of Bernama Datuk Seri Azman Ujang, Cikgu Ahmad Faizal Osman also known as Cikgu Emmet, Chairman of Board of Directors, Unimas Datu Dr. Hatta Solhi and Director of Centre for Technology Transfer & Consultancy, Institute of Biodiversity and Environmental Conservation, Unimas Prof. Dr. Lau Seng.

Datu Ose Murang, a member of YPS moderated the roundtable sessions.
