KUCHING: A total of 36,523 candidates are sitting for the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) 2022 examination at 259 centres throughout Sarawak starting today until March 15.

Education Department deputy director Dr Abang Hut Abang Engkeh said 34,268 candidates are from Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK), 766 (private secondary schools), 358 (schools under agencies other than the Ministry of Education – KPM), 24 (Sekolah Menengah Agama Rakyat – SMAR), and 1,107 (private candidates).

A total of 7,958 examination officers will oversee this year’s examination.

“We pray that the SPM candidates will do their best and achieve success.

“We advise the candidates to refer to the examination schedule throughout the examination dates and always bring the needed documents to the examination hall like identification cards and examination slips.

“It is undeniable that sometimes we are forgetful but we would like to advise the students to prepare themselves, stay healthy, and comply with the regulations set throughout the examination as this is an important moment for their future,” he said.

He was speaking to the media at Sekolah Menengah Sains Kuching here, today (Feb 20).

On the procedures to adopt in the event of students affected by Covid-19, he said the Ministry of Education along and the Ministry of Health are well prepared on the matter.

“No worries, we have a set of procedures to deal with unexpected situations such as Covid-19,” he said.

Meanwhile,  Sekolah Menengah Sains Kuching had opened its gate as early as 6am.

The school was swarmed by parents and teachers who came to give their moral support to the candidates.

Today, the candidates are sitting for their first written test for Bahasa Melayu.
