MIRI: A joint surprise raid by the Immigration Enforcement Unit (UPCI) and the Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) at a construction site dormitory in Marudi on May 22 resulted in the arrest of 37 individuals.

Prompted by intelligence and complaints, the operation began early in the morning. A total of 27 of them were foreigners.

“Upon inspection, it was revealed that all detainees had violated immigration laws, including overstaying, lacking valid travel documents, and not having valid passes or permits to reside in the country.

“The case has been initiated under Sections 15(1)(c) and 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63. The detainees hail from China, the Philippines, and Indonesia,” UPCI said in its Facebook page.

Meanwhile, the Immigration Department has reiterated its call for employers to uphold their responsibility by obtaining proper work permits for foreign workers to avoid legal repercussions.
