SAMARAHAN: A total of 38 fully sponsored medicine programme students received their Bachelor’s degrees at the Unimas convocation here, yesterday.
Vice-Chancellor, Professor Datuk Dr Mohamad Kadim Suaidi said they were the first batch of the programme who had received full scholarship from the Sarawak government through the Sarawak Foundation.
He expressed his appreciation to Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg for the strategic collaboration carried out with Unimas.
“This programme is an effort to develop human capital and overcome the shortage of medical doctors in the state,” he said at the Unimas Convocation Ceremony at DeTAR here, yesterday.
The convocation to celebrate the 3,972 graduates here was graced by the Head of State Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud.
Meanwhile, Kadim also disclosed that the university had accepted a total of 19 first cohort students for the Bachelor of Science in Agrotechnology programme.
According to him, the said programme was designed and developed as an enabler of the Agricultural Modernisation agenda in Sarawak.
“This programme will train and develop the expertise needed in precision farming, agricultural planning and development as well as technology development related to food safety,” he said.
He stated that aside from the Agrotechnology programme, the university also saw the admission of 38 first-year students, the first cohort of the Bachelor of Education (Islamic Studies) programme, Faculty of Cognitive Science and Human Development.
“This programme is the result of collaboration between Unimas, the State Department of Islamic Religion and the State Department of Education with the intention of helping to fill the shortage of Islamic Education Teachers in schools in the state,” he said.
In a related development, the university also received 289 international students from six countries with 218 of them taking virtual classes through the global classroom programme while 71 students attended classes physically in the campus.
“Meanwhile, a total of 627 students have gained new experience in nine countries with 579 students following the global classroom programme online while 48 gained experience physically abroad,” he said.
