4 arrested for online gambling

KUCHING: Four individuals were arrested over alleged involvement in online gambling at an eatery along Jalan Matang here while violating the movement control order (MCO) yesterday.

Padawan district police chief Supt Aidil Bolhassan said the four gamblers including an Indonesian woman were picked up at the premises at 5.45pm in a raid dubbed ‘Ops Bersepadu’ carried out by the state police headquarters D9 team.

“The suspects, aged between 18 and 61 years old comprising three locals and one foreigner were in the premises, engaging with their online gambling activities.

“The suspects also failed to provide valid and specific reasons to be out and about during the order and were taken to the Mile 10th police station for further action,” he said when contacted.

Following the raid, four mobile phones and a sling bag were seized as case evidences.

Aidil said based on initial investigation, the suspects went out to purchase essentials and stop by the said premises to gamble, while the female suspect admitted to be working behind the counter.

The case is being investigated under Regulation 7(1) of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases (Measures Within The Infected Local Areas) Regulations 2020 and Section 4(1)(c) of the Open Gambling Act 1953.
