47 arrested in illegal gambling operations

KUCHING: 47 people were arrested throughout Sarawak in operations against illegal gambling for the past one week. 34 were males while the rest were females aged between 17 and 58 years old.

Sarawak Criminal Investigation Department (CID) chief, SAC Dato’ Dev Kumar said the operations, which were against illegal gambling, cyber gambling and gambling in public places, took place in Kuching, Miri, Sibu, Samarahan, Bintulu, Sri Aman, Sarikei, Betong,Mukah and Serian Districts.

He said the CID conducted a total of 33 raids against illegal gambling.

Dev added that there was also illegal gambling at 24- hour convenience stores and coffee shops; six raids conducted in six districts resulted in the arrests of 10 service providers and seizure of eight mobile phones and RM7,085 cash. 26 raids were conducted at counters selling illegal 4D in nine districts.

The most raids –nine- were conducted in Padawan while six raids were conducted in Kuching and four in Miri.

The raids, according to Dev, resulted in the arrests of 32 individuals and seizure of RM7,700 cash.

Mobile phones, portable printers, calculators, betting slips and stationery were also seized.

Dev added a raid was also conducted by CID Kuching in front of a house at BDC, Kuching. During the raid, five individuals were arrested for gambling in a public place.

Holo paraphernalia and RM2,141 cash were seized. All those arrested are being investigated for offences under the Common Gaming House Act.

Dev warned that such raids would continue.
