487 graduates to receive degrees and diplomas at UPM convocation

BINTULU: A total of 487 graduates are scheduled to receive their respective degrees and diplomas at the 47th Convocation of the Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) Session 1 at Dewan Sri Kenyalang, UPM Bintulu Campus (UPMKB) this Saturday (Nov 4).

During the ceremony, UPM chancellor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah will confer Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees upon nine graduates, Master’s degrees upon 12 graduates, Bachelor’s degrees upon 84 graduates, and Diplomas upon 382 graduates from various academic programmes.

Sultan Sharafuddin will also present awards to the university-level award winners, including the Live Animals Medical Centre Award for the Best Bachelor’s Graduate, sponsored by the Live Animals Medical Centre, awarded to Nurul Syahmah Matsah from the Bachelor of Human Development and Management Science programme.

Additionally, the ‘Hadiah Kecemerlangan Yvonne Sing Sai Hoi (Graduan Terbaik Diploma)’ sponsored by Yvonne Sing Sai Hoi will be presented to Tai Yu Tian from the Diploma in Fisheries programme.

One of the PhD graduates who will participate in this convocation session is Alexander Chelum, an Iban singer from Sarawak who is conducting research on the “Symbols and Meanings of Nyangahant Rituals in Salako Community Culture in Kampung Pueh, Lundu, Sarawak, Malaysia.”

UPM in a statement on Thursday (Nov 2) said that the convocation ceremony celebrates the graduates and aligns with UPM’s strategic plan for 2021-2025, emphasising the goal of nurturing resilient graduates to face future challenges.

“The Agriculture Expo and UPM’s 47th Convocation Festival (Session 1) at UPMKB will take place from Nov 2 to 5, commencing at 8am and concluding at 11pm at the Expo Ground, Dewan Sri Kenyalang, UPMKB.”

Various activities and sales booths during the convocation festival will feature the sale of various plant species, including unique wild durian varieties specific to Sarawak, such as Durian Nyekak and Durian Isu.

Additionally, there will be food products, beverages, souvenirs, and convocation flowers available at reasonable prices, as well as various sports competitions such as E-sports, Rugby 7 Sides, Karaoke, Archery, Flying Fox, and Kayaking.

The public also will have an opportunity to participate in Putra Bakti @Animal Exhibition (AnimEX 5.0) which aims to raise awareness within the community about the importance of specialised care skills for pet animals, reptiles, and aquatic animals while also showcasing livestock species found in UPMKB.
