KUCHING: A 62-year-old man escaped unhurt when the four-wheel-drive (4WD) vehicle he was driving caught fire at Mile 8 Oya Road in Sibu around 6.10pm last Thursday.

It was learned that the victim was travelling along the road when he saw smoke coming out from the hood of the 4WD and immediately pulled over to check on it.

Soon after that, the vehicle caught fire.

The driver immediately called the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) for assistance.

Eight firefighters from Sungai Merah Fire Station were dispatched to the scene, about 16km from the station, after receiving the driver’s distress call at 6.17pm. They arrived at 6.33pm and took about 10 minutes to put out the fire.

The fire had, however, destroyed the 4WD.

The operation ended at 6.44pm.
