500 to compete in S’wak Tenpin Bowling tourney

KUCHING: More than 500 world-class tenpin bowlers will be competing in the Sarawak Tenpin Bowling Open International Tournament 2017 from September 6 to 9.

120 state tenpin bowlers will also be taking part in the tournament to be held at Megalanes Sarawak E-mart Batu Kawa here.

A total of 13 countries will be participating and they include Australia, Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, India, Arab, Kuwait, Philippines, Indonesia, China, Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia.
The champion will bring home RM100,000.

The organisers have also invited the Malaysian tenpin bowling team involved in the SEA Games to join the tournament.

According to the Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports, Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, among the teams which have confirmed their participation are the National Tenpin Bowling Teams of Singapore and the Philippines.

“The last time we organised this tournament was in 1998.

“I congratulate the organisers for rejuvenating this tournament as it will further boost the promotion of the state tourism,” Karim told a press conference at the State Stadium in Petra Jaya here on Friday.

He disclosed that Sarawak Tenpin Bowling Association was currently actively holding programmes and training for coaches for the benefit of young people who were interested in joining the sport.

“Many coaches have been trained to teach pupils in schools to venture into this sport.

“What I can say is that tenpin bowling is a good sport for family relationships,” added Karim.
