500 to take part in two Taekwondo tournaments

KUCHING: From 15 to 16 July 2017, 500 will take part in two Taekwondo tournaments; the Sarawak Chief Minister Borneo Cup International Taekwondo Championship 2017 Grand Overall Champion Trophy and the Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Datuk Amar Haji Adenan Satem Challenge Trophy.

The tournaments are to be held at the Stadium Perpaduan Sarawak and will see two main categories; Poomsae and Sparring.

For Poomsae, the sub-categories will include Individual (Male/Female), Pairs, and Teams (Male/Female).

As for Sparring, it will see the following sub-categories; 9-11 Years (Male/Female), 12-14 Years (Male/Female), 15-17 Years (Male/Female), and Open (Male/Female).

Those participating will not only come from Malaysia, but also various countries such as China, Singapore, Australia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, and Pakistan.

According to Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth, and Sports Datuk Haji Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, this is a good opportunity to boost the public’s interest in the sport as well as to increase the state’s presence in the world.

“We also want to make Sarawak a sports powerhouse as we hope to produce quality, world-class athletes for each sport.

“We also hope that the international participants will promote Sarawak when they go back to their respective countries,” he said during a press conference at his office in Baitulmakmur here on Thursday.

Among those also present during the event were the ministry’s permanent secretary Datu Ik Pahon Joyik, Taekwondo Association Sarawak (WTF) president Haji Mohamad Salleh Haji Sani, and deputy president Azizul Annuar Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Haji Adenan Satem.
